All of the bottom pieces, plank segments, butt connectors, frame pieces, gunwale segments and stems are made of B.S. 1088 marine mahogany plywood (meranti). The sides are of 6mm and the bottom 18mm, with the gunwales made from layers of 9mm. The inner stems are epoxy-laminated from 2 pieces of 18mm plywood, and the outer stems from 6 pieces of 6 mm plywood, also epoxy-laminated. Silicon bronze square drive wood screws are used throughout in the assembly process. These act not only as mini clamps but as an added insurance to the primary urethane glue joint used between all structural connections.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO MAKE YOUR SWAMPSCOTT ?
The time needed to build the Odyssey Swampscott surf dory is surprisingly minimal, since it has already been assembled once. Estimated construction time is about 12 to 20 hours for one person, depending on skill level. Boat parts are letter-, number- and color-coded to fit together easily. The instruction book has a place to mark off each step as you complete it. The ladder frame, the complete plans and instructions for which are included, takes a couple of hours itself. Once the ladder frame is built correctly, putting the kit together is a cinch.
Finishing the dory can take as little as 12 hours, spread over a couple of days, if a hard oil finish is used, or up to 40-50 hours, depending on the degree of finish desired, using epoxy, varnish and/or marine enamel. Whichever finish you choose, I strongly recommend an epoxy/glass protection on the bottom, and the skid shoe for protection if you are going to primarily be launching and landing the boat off a beach.
